The Tanais Bay of the Eastern Paratethys Sea at the Sarmatian–Maeotian Transition (Late Miocene): Widespread Desiccations and Local Uplifts in the Light of Historical Information

The Late Miocene evolution of the Eastern Paratethys Sea was marked by significant palaeogeographical transformations. knowledge them should be improved with information from peripheral parts this semi-enclosed marine basin. study area corresponds to Rostov Dome where northern shore is widely documented. previously published work, going back beginning 20th century, collected. Its analysis allows us document spatial distribution Middle Sarmatian–Late Maeotian (Tortonian–Messinian) deposits. results shed light into changes in Tanais Bay Sea, which included short-term hiatus at Middle/Late Sarmatian boundary, Early regression, and gradual ingression when bay re-established, but a different configuration. These overall studied deposits cannot explained only fluctuations level desiccation episodes established its central part. Most probably, local tectonic uplifts were an important driver Bay.
